Who are you and what do you do at F-Secure?

My name is Marvin. In my role as a Technical Capability Manager, I facilitate the co-operation between our corporate pre-sales and other supporting departments. Herding cats I sometimes tell myself, but I’m ultimately fascinated by the expertise found among or teams. In addition, I summarize new information about things that happened in our business line, relevant for (pre-)sales engineers and send a weekly email about the news (even if I missed a couple weeks already). I have calls with the local team regularly and facilitate and plan a bi-annual sales engineer meeting in Helsinki for a duration of two days.

What was the most memorable cyber security event/incident in 2017, and what should companies learn from it?

Not exclusive to 2017, but ransomware was still a hot topic. Companies need to understand that protection always has a margin to fail, yet the best improvement would be in educating how users understand security. Most ransomware infections happen when users open forged emails and attachments (launching documents).

What are the most important trends that you believe we will see impact cyber security in the next 3-5 years?

The usage of cloud services or a hybrid of the public/private cloud. Security issues could impact more people at the same time, but could also be fixed quicker for all users – it goes both ways.

What are your top 3 tips for companies looking at improving their cyber security in 2018 and beyond?

  1. Educate users more
  2. Give admin staff more time for dedicated training/certifications
  3. Think not just “that one thing” but holistically, how to improve the company security

What’s on your wish list to Santa Claus this year?

Continued health and the discipline to improve myself.

Are you planning to make any work-related New Year’s resolutions?

No, not that there is no need for change, it is just irrelevant to the new year.

What’s your favorite information source on cyber security?

“Security Now” Podcast. F-Secure blogs (for real – so much content I need to catch up on) as well as others. Gartner papers. reddit.com/r/netsec , reddit.com/r/netsecstudents , reddit.com/r/sysadmin

If you’d have to recommend people to follow one cyber security influencer, who would she/he be?

Not a single influencer – read blogs.
