I Already Have Internet Security — So Why Do I Need a VPN?

Millions of people don’t just like free Wi-Fi—they plan their lives around it. A study from last year found that 49 percent of business travelers say that they consider free Wi-Fi a “deciding” factor when picking out a place to stay.

And when they connect from their hotel room or at an airport or in a coffee shop via laptop, phone or tablet, they’re likely emailing, shopping and banking as if they’re at home or in their office. It doesn’t feel any different to get online through Wi-Fi than it does through a secure network so why would you behave any differently—especially if you’re running updated Internet Security software?

But there is a big difference.

“Without a VPN, it’s trivial for anyone else using the same Wi-Fi to see big parts of your traffic,” Mikko Hypponen, F-Secure’s Chief Research Officer, explained during a Q&A session on Quora.

A VPN encrypts your data, even on public Wi-Fi, creating a private tunnel that makes your personal information impossible to intercept.

“Think of it as drawing your curtains at home when you don’t people outside looking into your house,” Olli, an F-Secure Partner Sales Manager, explained in this video below.

But with a good VPN, you get more than protection for your Wi-Fi or mobile connection.

“I like VPNs that exchange your privacy by also removing tracking cookies and other potential breaches of privacy,” Mikko said. “The added benefit of this is that browsing becomes much faster – it’s often faster with a VPN than without!”

So as well as up-to-date online security, you should run a VPN, especially if you do your business on the run. The launch of F-Secure total security and privacy marks the first time F-Secure has combined complete protection for both your online safety and your privacy. In addition to our award-winning internet security, you also get the power of Freedome, which offers both the VPN and tracking protection Mikko enjoys.

Wherever you connect, F-Secure total security and privacy protects all your PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets by scanning all files, applications and websites you visit online to prevent malware infections that may collect and distribute your personal information. It also prevents businesses, cybercriminals or authoritative organizations from tracking you online and using your personal information. You can also access virtual locations to use services available only available in certain regions.
