My secret life as an office services specialist

To commemorate F-Secure’s 30th year of innovation, we’re profiling 30 of our fellows from our more than 25 offices around the globe.

People know Ella Fisher as a Dutch writer. But not many people realize that Ella Fisher is actually just Wendy Visser’s mild-mannered alter ego.

As Ella, she writes romances, thrillers, poems, blogs, kids stories, and much more (you can learn more on her website). She’s currently searching for a publisher for her first book, De Ontwaking (The Awakening).

But during business hours, Wendy is the engine – also known as an office services specialist – that runs F-Secure’s Dutch/Belgian operations.

Wendy feels that the inspiring environment, global presence, and unique portfolio of security solutions sets F-Secure apart from other companies. But working with her colleagues and helping them with the wide range of daily tasks that occur in F-Secure offices all over the world is what she likes the most about her job.

“The best part of my job is getting to take care of the office and colleagues,” explains Wendy. “It creates a lot of variance in my work. Like when I help with translating texts, organizing events, or other sales and marketing tasks. I think this diversity would surprise most people.”

Highlights during her two years at F-Secure include the opportunities to socialize and get to know other fellows. Attending an orientation seminar at F-Secure’s headquarters for new fellows is one example. Flying to Helsinki to attend a company wide kick-off in early 2018 is another.

“I think it’s really important to get to know people you work with, even if you usually work with them via Skype or email,” says Wendy. “Arranging events to bring people from different places together so they can meet face-to-face means you’re not just a number here. You’re a face and a person, and that’s what I value the most.”

She also enjoys the amount of trust and confidence her colleagues place in her. That trust means they involve her in bigger projects, where she’s always able to learn more things and grow her professional profile.

“I’m happy when I’m trusted to work on things like the Live Security Academy or even just translating articles. Those are learning opportunities that help prepare me for more responsibility and new tasks in the future,” she says.

Wendy doesn’t see Ella writing a cyber security thriller anytime soon. But she does feel that working at F-Secure has made her a better writer. And that influence works both ways.

“I translate articles and write newsletters for our local market. That makes me think creatively and use my writing skills in new ways. And it helps me learn and grow as a writer, which feeds back into the company when I work with our sales and marketing people.”

Check out our open positions if you want to join Wendy and the hundreds of other great fellows fighting to keep internet users safe from online threats.
