To commemorate F-Secure’s 30th year of innovation, we’re profiling 30 of our fellows from our more than 25 offices around the globe.
“It’s true that cyber criminals are getting smarter and using more sophisticated attacks. And everyone is starting to realize that there’s no magic, bulletproof defense,” says F-Secure’s Samu Konttinen. “That’s why detection and response capabilities are now essential for companies, as breaches happening even to the best of them. What happens after you’ve been breached is what counts – how fast you detect it is crucial so that you minimize damage. Our goal is to become recognized as the world’s leading source of detection and response solutions with the best experts to counter the most challenging cyber attacks.”
It’s a bold goal. But Samu knows better than most what F-Secure and the company’s 1600+ fellows can accomplish. He’s held a wide variety of roles since joining the company in 2005. And several leadership positions since 2009, including Executive Vice President of Consumer Security, Executive Vice President of Corporate Security, Executive Vice President of Customer and Market Operations, and Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
And in addition to his current responsibilities at F-Secure, Samu is the Chair of the Finnish Information Security Cluster (FISC) and a board member at the European Cyber Security Organization (ECSO).
After having a hand in so many different parts of the cyber security business, Samu has a pretty good idea how F-Secure can conquer the rapidly expanding detection and response market.
“Trust is essential in this industry. And that’s something you can’t simply buy with money. It takes commitment and a customer-centric mindset. And you also have to have the capabilities and the right technology to deliver what your customers are expecting. Putting the needs of our customers at the heart of our decisions is how we earn their trust because they know we’re looking out for their interests,” he explains. “We provide peace of mind as a service.”
But that’s not the only part of Samu’s recipe for success. Developing an atmosphere of trust and respect between colleagues is where everything starts. That’s why fellowship has been an integral part of F-Secure’s culture since the company’s founding 30 years ago.
And having great people is absolutely the best part about F-Secure. Samu notes that F-Secure’s fellows are insanely committed. Many perform their best work while under pressure (something anyone working in cyber security will eventually encounter.)
That makes blowing off steam important. And Samu, F-Secure’s CEO, has a recipe for that as well.
“Spending time with family, sports, and cooking,” is what Samu does and recommends for others. “I don’t mean to brag, but I’ve got a ragu recipe that I’m pretty proud of.”
So Samu’s expectations for F-Secure going forward might seem bold. But he knows how the company can get there. And he’s looking forward to being part of the adventure.
