What Makes an Ideal F-Secure Fellow?

Finding top talent is much easier for our recruiters at F-Secure in Finland, for a pretty obvious reason.

“We have a strong brand in Finland,” Johanna Kurki, F-Secure’s Global Cyber Talent Acquisition & Employer Branding Lead, explained in  a new report called Milton Insights IV: The Death of the Chameleon. “Recruiting success can be seen to vary almost geographically depending on brand value.”

That’s why finding a sales pro in Germany, where F-Secure has thrived for over a decade, is still more difficult than finding a top recruit in Finland, where the company has been headquartered for almost 29 years, helping to secure the country’s reputation for doing a fantastic job when it comes to cyber security.

In Finland, it’s pretty well-known that F-Secure has established a commitment to recruiting candidates who don’t just want to be employees but also want to join our community of Fellows. It’s that reputation and commitment that attracted 80 developers to a recent recruitment event we hosted in Helsinki with the help of HackerX. Interested parties got a chance to quickly chat with 12 of our current Fellows “speed-date style.”

Our continuing mission is to make our this dedication to fellowship as well-known in the up to 25 countries where we may be recruiting at any time to fill dozens of open positions.

To give you an idea what we’re looking for, we asked some of our internal leaders to describe what makes an ideal F-Secure Fellow.

“Curious, critical, keen to learn and wants to understand the relevant context and need why things are done,” Ari Inki, F-Secure’s Chief Architect, Security Research & Technologies, told me. “Understands that perfection is often the enemy of good. Team player, succeeds with the team, avoids heroic efforts and is not a cowboy. Willing to go the extra mile when needed, but understands the importance of sustained pace (for work-life balance).”

Dmitriy Viktorov, F-Secure’s Lead Architect, Product Management, seconded Ari’s assessment, and stressed the importance of design simplicity with a quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: “Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

Johanna summed her vision up by saying, “In general we are looking for people with passion to help people to be free in the digital world. People who are ready to roll their sleeves and dig in as we don’t have lonely stars and our organization is never ready. We aim to give myriad of opportunities to learn and share knowledge with wide array of different roles across the company globally.”

If this is the kind of ideal you think you’d enjoy living up to, now is the time to apply or set up an alert so you’ll know the right position has opened up for you.
